What Happens in Vegas...Follows Us Everywhere

Unless you live in cave, you've heard the catchy and clever ad slogan designed to boost travel and tourism to Las Vegas. This brash and bold 'what happens here, stays here' enticement comes off as hip as it is phallic, promising that if you wanna be naughty, come to 'sin city' because no one is going to rat you out. And being bad can be really good, as long as you don't get caught, right?

Say it ain't so, Joe.

Remember when right was right, wrong was wrong, and there was no right way to do a wrong thing? Remember when the good guys wore white hats, played by the rules, and kept their promises?

I do.

My parents took great measures to engrain in me that lying, cheating, and deception were never okay, and that even if I managed "get away with it," my conscience would haunt me until I made things right. I recall the time when the heroes were the John Wayne-types who embodied uncompromising honor and integrity. Going into my college years, I was quite certain that justice always prevailed in the end, and that being innocent and being found not guilty were one-and-the-same.

When did all that suddenly change?

It would be next-to-impossible for anyone under the age of twenty-five to describe the lines separating right from wrong as anything other than very fuzzy, let alone not think that all rules are negotiable and/or open to personal interpretation. How could they to take a look at what happens all around them and not believe that the consequences for bad behavior are up for debate - up for appeal - and often up for sale? They've grown up in a culture where it's not uncommon for the liars and the cheaters to end up with the spoils-and get the respect and the cheers. Conversely, those who seek to enforce the laws and hold others to accountability are often considered self-righteous 'party crashers' who are out of touch with what's really going on and simply want to ruin the fun for everyone else.

It's never been easy to raise children of solid moral character, but today that challenge is harder than ever before. And today's children are tomorrow's employees, coworkers, and CEO's.

Honesty and integrity in the workplace cannot be achieved by posting a set of rules and policies in the employee break room, or even by prosecuting the offenders. Your emerging workforce can easily find the cracks in your system, and know that if they choose to exploit them and get caught, there is always a way to avoid the stated consequences. To hold them to the highest standards of character and ethical behavior, they need to be completely enveloped in an environment that celebrates it to the point where only those who are truly ill call in 'sick,' where honesty is expected and publicly recognized, and where the whistleblowers become the ultimate heroes.

It's time to rise up and take a stand against the 'what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas' wink-and-a-nod mindset and realize its reach goes far beyond the seedy stuff happening in the mega-resorts of the Mojave dessert. Any form of truth decay, left unchecked, will eventually seep its way into our communities, our businesses, and our homes. After all, there is no secret place we can go on vacation from our character, then return to our everyday life and to find it waiting for us like a loyal dog.

If you find yourself getting depressed about the deterioration of our society, remember that society is not them; it's us. You and I. And what you and I say, and do, truly does matter.

Whys Cracks

NIGHT SHIFT 2: The Real Sequel - Police in Southampton, PA, stopped 24-year-old William Bethel Jr. on a routine traffic violation. He was driving a mortuary body delivery service van, yet when they pulled him over he was in the middle of several deliveries for Domino's Pizza. Bethel admitted he was using the same vehicle for pizza and bodies since he was able to get an extra shift doing pizza delivery, and his car was in the shop. But, he said, he wasn't transporting dead bodies and pizza at the same time. When the mortuary service learned of the police report, Bethel was fired. Bethel, who admitted he shouldn't have been driving at all since his license was suspended, was cited for driving a commercial vehicle without a current inspection certificate, and driving with a suspended license. He said he hopes to be a mortician some day. (Bucks County Courier Times)...Bodies delivered in 20 minutes or less or your embalming is free.
